OptiDark - How to install in Google Chrome
==========================================

OptiDark is installed as an "unpacked" extension. It takes about a minute.

1. Unzip the download
---------------------
- Mac: double-click OptiDark.zip. A folder called "OptiDark" appears next to it.
- Windows: right-click OptiDark.zip > Extract All... > Extract.

Move the "OptiDark" folder somewhere permanent, for example your
Documents folder. Chrome loads the extension from this folder every time it
starts, so do not delete, rename or move it after installing.

2. Open Chrome's extensions page
--------------------------------
In Chrome, open the menu (the three dots, top right) > Extensions >
Manage Extensions.

Or type this into the address bar and press Enter:

    chrome://extensions

3. Turn on Developer mode
-------------------------
In the top-right corner of the Extensions page, switch "Developer mode" ON.
Three new buttons appear at the top left.

4. Load OptiDark
----------------
- Click "Load unpacked".
- Find and select the "OptiDark" folder from step 1. It is the folder that
  contains the file "manifest.json".
- Click "Select" (Mac) or "Select Folder" (Windows).

OptiDark now appears in your list of extensions with its switch turned on.

If Chrome says "Manifest file is missing or unreadable", you picked the
wrong folder level. Open the folder and pick the one that has
manifest.json directly inside it.

5. Pin it to the toolbar (recommended)
--------------------------------------
Click the puzzle-piece icon to the right of the address bar, then click the
pin next to OptiDark. Its icon now sits in your toolbar.

6. Use it
---------
Already-open tabs need a refresh (Cmd+R on Mac, Ctrl+R on Windows) before
OptiDark applies to them. New tabs work straight away.

Click the OptiDark icon to choose, per website:
- Automatic: darkens light pages and leaves sites that are already dark alone.
- Force dark: always darken this site.
- Leave untouched: never darken this site.

"Advanced settings" (in the popup) has the global on/off switch, the darkness
choice (Pure Black or A Little Less), and per-site fixes.

Updating to a newer version
---------------------------
1. Download and unzip the new OptiDark.zip.
2. Replace the contents of your existing OptiDark folder with the new files.
3. Go to chrome://extensions and click the circular reload arrow on the
   OptiDark card.
Your settings are kept.

Removing OptiDark
-----------------
Go to chrome://extensions and click "Remove" on the OptiDark card. You can
then delete the folder.

Good to know
------------
- Chrome may occasionally show a notice about developer-mode extensions.
That is normal for extensions installed this way.
- OptiDark cannot change Chrome's own pages (chrome://...) or the Chrome Web
Store. That is a Chrome restriction.
- It also works in other Chromium browsers (Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi). The
extensions page is edge://extensions, brave://extensions and so on; the
  steps are the same.
- No account, no tracking, no network requests. Settings are stored locally
  in your browser.
